Practice Questions vs Video Lectures for the EA Exam: What the Research Says

A good tax instructor can make a difficult rule feel obvious. That feeling is useful, but it is also dangerous.

When the instructor is on screen, the examples are visible and the answer follows in a tidy sequence. You recognize each step. Recognition feels like knowledge. Then the screen goes away, a new fact pattern appears, and the rule you "understood" is suddenly hard to retrieve.

The Enrolled Agent exam does not ask whether a lecture looked familiar. It gives you 100 multiple-choice questions and asks you to identify the governing rule without the instructor beside you.

That is why the best EA study method is not measured by hours watched. It is measured by what you can retrieve cold, correct after a miss, and retrieve again after enough time has passed to make forgetting possible.

Video is useful, but watching is not the finish line

Videos solve a real problem. A beginner needs someone to explain unfamiliar concepts, model a calculation, and show why two similar rules are different. Research on worked examples supports guided instruction for novices because it reduces unnecessary cognitive load while they build an initial mental model.

The problem starts when explanation becomes the whole study plan.

Pausing a lecture, taking notes, highlighting a PDF, and replaying a difficult section can improve familiarity. None of those activities proves that you can produce the rule independently. The only clean test is to hide the explanation and try to answer.

This difference between exposure and retrieval sits underneath decades of learning research.

The testing effect: memory changes when you retrieve it

In a landmark experiment, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students study prose passages and then either restudy them or practice recalling them. Restudying helped on a test given minutes later. After a week, the result reversed: repeated retrieval produced substantially better retention than repeated study.

The often-cited result was 61% retention for the repeated-testing condition versus 40% for repeated study after one week. The point is not that every EA candidate will reproduce those exact percentages. The point is that retrieving information is itself a learning event.

A broader review by Dunlosky and colleagues evaluated ten popular study techniques. Practice testing and distributed practice received the highest utility ratings because their benefits appeared across different learners, materials, and testing conditions. Rereading and highlighting did not perform nearly as well.

A later classroom meta-analysis by Yang and colleagues synthesized 222 effects. Quizzing improved classroom learning, and corrective feedback significantly affected the size of the benefit.

The pattern is hard to ignore: if most of your study time is spent consuming explanations, you are leaving one of the strongest learning mechanisms unused.

Why passive study can fool serious students

Passive study is not popular because students are lazy. It is popular because it feels smooth.

A clear instructor removes confusion as it appears. A highlighted passage looks familiar on the second reading. A video progress bar moves forward. All three give visible evidence that time was spent. None guarantees that the rule is available from memory.

Researchers have even found a gap between learning and the feeling of learning. In a controlled classroom experiment, students in an active-learning condition learned more while reporting that they had learned less than students in a more fluent lecture condition.

Difficulty is not automatically productive. A broken explanation or ambiguous question is simply bad instruction. But the manageable difficulty of recalling a rule before seeing it can strengthen the path needed on exam day.

Corrective feedback turns a miss into instruction

Practice questions work best when they do more than reveal a letter.

Suppose a candidate misses a question about the qualifying-child relationship test. "Incorrect: C" provides almost no repair. A useful explanation identifies the rule, shows why the chosen answer fails, and distinguishes the distractors.

The next step matters too. Restating the governing distinction in your own words forces you to process the correction rather than nod at it. A later rematch tests whether the correction stuck.

An immediate rematch can confirm that a correction entered short-term memory. It cannot establish durable retention. For that, time must pass.

Distributed practice has been studied for more than a century. Cepeda and colleagues reviewed hundreds of experiments and found a robust advantage for spacing study across time rather than concentrating it into one session.

The research points toward a practical sequence:

1. Learn the rule briefly

2. Close the material

Answer without notes. This is the moment that separates familiarity from usable knowledge.

3. Read the entire explanation

Do not stop at the correct letter. A lucky guess does not reveal why the distractors fail.

4. Repair the distinction

After a miss, write the rule in plain language. If you cannot explain the distinction, you have not repaired it yet.

5. Rematch

Answer again after the correction. The purpose is not to collect points. It is to prove that the corrected rule can now be retrieved.

6. Leave and come back

Return after enough time for retrieval to become effortful. Delayed success means more than immediate success.

7. Mix the topics

Move from predictable topic blocks to mixed questions. Practice identifying the governing rule before applying it.

8. Simulate the exam

Complete realistic mocks without notes, interruptions, or instant explanation. Review only after the block is finished.

The cost of waiting to practice

Candidates often tell themselves they will finish the lectures first and start questions when they feel ready. That reverses the purpose of practice.

Questions are not merely the final measurement. They expose what the lecture failed to make retrievable. Starting them early gives you time to correct weak rules, space later attempts, and discover false confidence before exam week.
