Becoming an Enrolled Agent From India: The 2026 Path, Costs, and Real Career Outlook

Last reviewed: July 22, 2026. This article reflects current IRS EA requirements and PSI testing availability for international candidates.

India is the largest source of Enrolled Agent candidates outside the United States. Walk into any Big Four office in Mumbai, Bangalore, or Delhi and you'll find EAs working on US tax returns. The US tax outsourcing industry in India employs thousands of professionals. The EA credential is the standard entry point.

And for years, Indian candidates faced a logistics problem: the nearest Prometric test center might be in another city, or another country. Some flew to Dubai. Some waited for a US trip. The exam was accessible on paper and hard to reach in practice.

That changed this month. PSI Services launched remote proctoring for international EA candidates in July 2026. An accountant in Pune can now take the exam from home. The geography barrier that made the EA harder to access from India than from the US is mostly gone.

The Indian EA pipeline

The numbers are rough because the IRS doesn't publish candidate counts by country. But the indicators are consistent. More than 1,500 US tax outsourcing firms operate in India. The Big Four. Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG. all have large US tax practices in Indian offices. Mid-tier firms like RSM, BDO, and Grant Thornton have Indian US tax operations. Boutique firms serving US clients from India have proliferated in the last five years.

These firms need EAs. An EA credential lets an Indian tax professional sign US tax returns, represent clients before the IRS, and take on work that a non-credentialed preparer can't perform. For a firm billing US clients at US rates while paying Indian salaries, the economics are obvious. For the individual EA, the credential opens a path to US-level compensation while living in India.

The typical path for an Indian EA candidate: accounting degree or CA/CMA qualification, one to two years of US tax experience at a firm, EA exam preparation alongside work, remote testing from India, and either staying with the firm at a higher role or moving to a US-based remote position.

What it costs from India

The IRS user fee is $66 per part. PSI's international remote proctoring fee varies by country. For India, expect roughly $200 to $250 per part in PSI fees on top of the IRS fee. Total per part: roughly $266 to $316.

The PTIN costs $18.75 per year and can be obtained online. The enrollment fee after passing all three parts (Form 23) is $140 payable through Pay.gov. Total direct costs from India: roughly $940 to $1,090 depending on PSI fees.

Compare this to the CA, which takes three to five years and costs significantly more in coaching and exam fees. Or the US CPA, which requires 150 credit hours of US education (a non-starter for most Indian candidates without a US degree). The EA is the most accessible US professional credential available to Indian accountants, and by a wide margin.

What the career actually looks like

The EA credential does not guarantee a job. It does not guarantee a US salary. It does not guarantee remote work from a beach in Goa.

What it does: makes you eligible for roles that require EA status. US tax compliance associate at a Big Four firm's Indian office. Senior tax analyst at a US tax outsourcing company. Independent contractor preparing US returns for American clients. These roles exist. They're growing. They pay significantly more than Indian domestic tax work.

The salary range for an EA in India varies enormously. An entry-level EA at a mid-tier outsourcing firm might make INR 6-10 lakhs per year. An experienced EA at a Big Four or a US-based remote firm can make INR 15-25 lakhs or more. The top end. EAs running their own practices serving US clients directly. can earn US-equivalent fees while maintaining Indian cost of living.

The credential opens the door. The career depends on what you do after you walk through it.

What to watch out for

Many Indian EA coaching institutes sell the credential as a guaranteed path to a US salary. It's not. The EA is a license to practice before the IRS. It's not a work visa. It's not a job offer. It's not a remote work guarantee. The firms that hire EAs in India hire people who can do the work, not people who only passed the exam.

The exam tests tax knowledge. The job tests whether you can apply that knowledge to real returns under deadline pressure. If you've never prepared a US tax return before, passing the EA exam makes you eligible to learn, not ready to practice. Get experience before you get the credential, or get the credential and immediately seek experience.

Remote testing is new. PSI's remote proctoring platform may have technical issues during the first testing window. Have a backup internet connection. Test your webcam and microphone before exam day. Read PSI's technical requirements carefully. A proctoring session terminated due to technical failure may not be refundable.
